The greatest challenge for urn reduction in the oceans by means of engineering

The Underwater Radiated Noise (URN) generated by the shipping sector has increased during the last decades due to the growth of maritime activity in the oceans, producing negative impacts on marine fauna through the reduction of its capability of communicating, navigating, reproducing or hunting. More efforts must be addressed in terms of the international regulation definition (measurement, noise thresholds, engineering criteria, etc.) to deal with this issue and different actions are being taken by countries such as Canada and other private and public entities to engage all the stakeholders from the shipping sector.

The main objective of this study is to identify the triggers of change to develop a shipping industry with silent vessels and the advance engineering technologies that can be potentially used to manage and minimize the URN emitted by ships. Furthermore, it is explained the noise and vibration comprehensive management methodology carried out by TSI in the designing and construction of low acoustic signature vessels.
