It is a pleasure to announce that Técnicas y Servicios de Ingeniería (TSI) is participating in the SEA DEFENCE project (Survivability, Electrification, Automation, Detectability, Enabling Foresight of European Naval Capabilities in Extreme conditions), where a feasibility study will be carried out to provide a roadmap of technologies to be included in the next generation of naval platforms and implemented in subsequent European development military programs and projects. The SEA-DEFENCE project funded by EDIDP (European Defence Industrial Development Programme), with an overall budget of 14.290.676 €, has a total duration of 30 months, from December 2020 to May 2023. The Kick Off Meeting of the project was held on 17th December and it counted with the participation of the consortium of the project and the involved European Defence Ministries in the framework of the project (https://www.damen.com/en/news/2020/12/official_kick_off_of_the_edidp_funded_sea_defence_project). The main role of the SEA DEFENCE project is to promote the cooperation between the European military naval industry to preserve the excellence and competitiveness of its navies with the main purpose to enable the exchange of technology between the European member countries. Thanks to the extensive experience gained by the participation of TSI in R&D and commercial projects with regards to the abatement of noise and vibrations (N&V), TSI has been subcontracted by NAVANTIA for the study of technologies that can be applied for the reduction of the acoustic detectability of naval platforms. The SEA DEFENCE project consortium is made up of twelve partners from eight European countries (Spain, France, Sweden, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Germany), which will be supported by renowned shipyards and Ministry of Defence from the European Union. DAMEN shipyards is responsible for the coordination of the SEA DEFENCE project. This company will work in close collaboration with other partners of recognized prestige in the development of military naval projects such as NAVANTIA, FINCANTIERI, NAVAL GROUP, SAAB KOCKUMS, SEA EUROPE, LÜRSSEN DEFENCE THYSSENKRUPP MARINE SYSTEMS y ODENSE MARITIME TECHNOLOGY, along with three research centres such as CTN, TNO y MARIN. Thanks to the wide experience of TSI in the field of noise and vibrations and its participation in R&D and commercial projects regarding on board noise and underwater radiated noise, TSI was proposed by the Spanish shipyard NAVANTIA as subcontractor of the project. In this project, TSI will carry out the tasks corresponding to the study of engineering measures applicable for the reduction of acoustic detectability in the next generation of naval platforms. The role of TSI in SEA DEFENCE consists on the study, analysis and potential implementation of technologies to reduce the acoustic signature of the naval defence platforms. To carry out this purpose, the technologies with the most demanding military requirements for the reduction of the acoustic signature as well as they will be compared with Comfort, Noise, Vibrations and Underwater Radiated Noise requirements of regulatory bodies such as IMO, ILO, Classification Societies, ISO and ICES (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea). TSI will contribute with its technical background in N&V and silent vessels design, to carry out the following activities within the framework of the SEA DEFENCE project.

  • Evaluation of the technological feasibility of the engineering solutions available in the market for the mitigation of the acoustic signature of military ships. To carry out this task, it is considered technologies currently applied and promising technologies for the reduction of the acoustic signature according to: design of low cavitation propellers, application of alternative materials, design of hull and superstructures with special shapes, modification of the ship turbulent wake, injection of air bubbles to reduce underwater noise levels, variation of the ship operation conditions, etc.
  • Analysis of the impact of the acoustic signature control technologies to reduce the detectability of the military ships. In this task, TSI will weigh the influence of technologies for the reduction of the hydrodynamic, structural-borne noise, airborne noise, and underwater radiated noise emitted by military assets.
  • Collaborating in the task related to the evaluation for the acoustic signature prediction of ships/platforms, as well as the limitations of these tools for acoustic noise prediction.
  • Assisting in the definition of the preliminary design guidelines to enable the integration and implementation in shipyards of noise mitigation solutions in the new generation of naval platforms.

In overview, the SEA-DEFENCE project is a cooperation project participated by European representatives of the naval industry and defence institutions, which will provide cutting-edge technologies to the marine navies and lay the foundations for future R&D lines and innovation advances.
